A brief summary of the trials and tribulations of the famous Joes...... Last minute heartbreak for Joes So near and yet so far was the story of this one as Joes managed to grab defeat from the jaws of victory. After last weeks disappointment Joes put on one their best performances of the season. Had it no been for some dodgy finishing, Tongue could have been out of sight in the first half. However in sevens the game is not over until the fat whatever sings and how true for Joes after this one. Joes had nearly a full squad with only absentees Gunn who decided his loyalties lay elsewhere and Cormack who is still harping on about this ankle, not that he uses it much anyway. Wilson went for the following line-up:- Miller Lannon Wilson Cowie Moodier Sutherland Olla Subs - A Miller, Campbell, Smith, Budge In a typical Naver night for football, the wind was ferocious and the showers of rain not much better. Tongue won the toss and decided to let Joes have the wind at their back in the first half. A brisk start to the match saw Joes have the early pressure. A kick in from the left from Cowie saw Olla only 2 foot from goal. However the veteran decided to try the crossbar challenge instead of just scoring. He succeeded in hitting the bar, unfortunately Joes did not receive a goal for his efforts. Lannon then had a mazy run where he was unlucky not to get on the score sheet and soon after he tried the same only to come away with nothing but a clothes line and a sore throat. Tongue also had chances but Miller and the rearguard were up to the challenge. Olla then received some heavy challenges winning two free kicks in quick succession. With the second one seeming to happen in slow motion. As half time neared Joes gaffer Wilson was content with the display and was confident for the second half. Only 4 minutes into the second half Joes broke the deadlock. A through ball from Moodie saw Budge turn his marker and fire the ball past Keith to frantic celebrations from keeper Miller. As the wind increased the high balls became a lottery and an unlucky bounce saw Tongue capitalise to win a corner. The resultant clearance came back down the left and top scorer Jason MacKay rifled a low shot which went through a ruck of players to see Tongue level. It looked like the heads would go down but Joes came fighting back. A fine run saw Sutherland beat his man for pace and he managed to toe poke the ball past the out rushing Tongue keeper to see Joes ahead again. There then followed some frantic defending as Tongue became increasingly desperate to ensure their promotion hopes were not derailed. Firstly Miller saved a net bound own goal from his namesake Alistair and then Smith was the hero with a goal line clearance. Then disaster struck as Tongue levelled for the second time in the match. They nearly went 3-2 up just after but smith again came to the rescue with a fantastic late tackle. Joes then had a chance to take all three points but Moodie tried to place his shot and the keeper saved. with the game in its last minute, Tongue managed to sneak a winner as a cross was missed to allow Keith, now out of goal, to stroke the ball home. At the end Tongue knew they had been in a game and must have surely felt extremely lucky to take all three points. Miller 7 luckily there were no caesareans this week and he took his place in the team Lannon 7 back outfield and some fine runs from his defensive post Wilson 8 only for a great shout after Smith made a last ditch tackle in the 2nd half "go on Smith ya sexy beast" Cowie 7 Looked out of sorts but grew as the game went on, not literally of course Moodie 7 He's like a bus, you don't see him for months, then he comes along 2 weeks in a row Sutherland 6 Marked down for his comment after being subbed "Its the two unlikeliest scorers the night eh" Olla 7 If only for the slow motion tumble to the ground, legend Campbell 6 Put himself about after coming on Smith 8 Was attacking, goal line clearance and last ditch tackles, is there no end to the boys talents after losing the lbs..... Miller A 6 Lucky not to put through hi sown net Budge 6 Struck it lucky with the goal MOTM - A barnstorming performance from the sub, just how he doesn't get a start is beyond me, its William Smith
Return of Moodie is let down for Joes The much heralded return of playmaker Moodie to the Top Joes ranks failed to materialise. Moodie was indeed back in the team for his second appearance of the season but this failed to spark the Joes into life against the team directly above them in the league. Blackstairs deserved their victory in what was for them a much improved display from the 4-1 demolishing they received from Joes earlier in the season. Joes were dealt a pre-match blow with talismanic keeper Ed Miller ruled out due to birthing complications and legendary stand in gaffer Cormack still suffering from “ankle” pains although with the cost of fuel coming down you’d think he’d be happier to travel through for matches now. Cowie was unavailable as he was on a nappy changing course which Budge is soon to sign up for. Therefore gaffer Wilson was left with no choice but to pitch madcap Lannon in the nets for this crucial fixture. The full team was as below Lannon Wilson Gunn Smith Moodie Miller Ola Subs Campbell, Budge The match which Joes had hoped for so much in didn't quite live up to expectations. However the effort was there, it just seemed like one of those nights when no matter how long Joes played for, they would never have scored. Indeed even sharp shooter Smith had a gilt edged chance right at the death and even he couldn't find the net. On a disappointing night on Joes, there is not much else to say. Lannon – 8 Fine performance from the 4th choice keeper. Really kept his team in it in the 1st half and had no chance with either goal. Concentration levels have improved after his 12 day wall papering. Wilson – 6 Powerful performance form the gaffer as he works his way back to fitness after a long lay off. Gunn – 6 typical bust a gut display but a night when nothing seemed to go right for him Smith – 6 Continues to defy logic in that he has become so much fitter than we could ever have imagined Moodie – 6 Well just when we were starting to believe we really had missed him………….. Miller – 6 Fine performance from the big man Ola – 6 starved of decent service, least he now knows how we felt when we went to the Northern Sands that night…….. Campbell – 6 Given a longer than expected run as Ola tired…… Budge – 4 His 10 minute 2nd half cameo role was probably too long but now wishes he’d stayed on to save smith the embarrassment of THAT miss…. MOTM - By a mile, our very own Bruce Grobalaar, step forward Andrew Lannon
Carbon Copy as Joes edged out by Promotion hopefuls There are many games labelled a six pointer, but this one really was. Having been called off at half-time when the teams met on a slightly icy pitch, this game was two rolled into one with a winner takes 6 points scenario. Unfortunately for them, a rejuvenated Carbon took all the points but not quite all the plaudits. A brave show from Joes no doubt gave Carbon a scare. Indeed if they had not been at full strength and with Joes down to the bare bones (Donnie Olla started), it could have been all so different. Manager Wilson returned to Naver after a few weeks out to find he hardly had a squad to choose from. Out were injury victims Cormack (ankle sprain whilst cleaning the shower), Al Miller (cracked rib after toy wrestling with his step-son) and Lannon (Paperer's elbow). Moodie was unavailable and Gunn decided to do a training session with Halkirk before turning up. Therefore Wilson went with:- Miller Wilson Cowie Smith Sutherland Campbell Ola Sub- Budge and then Gunn midway through first half. Smith was to start on the bench but such was his greeting face, Budge decided to step down to the bench before Smith damaged anymore of his toys..... The opening stages of the match saw Carbon have most of the play as they sprayed the ball around well making Joes work hard to keep the game goalless. However Cowie looked solid at the back with Wilson ably assisting as Joes went back to the future with their tried and tested back line. In fact Miller didn't really have all that much to do as the players in front of him really put in a good shift. However a 5 minute period saw Joes lose 3 goals in quick succession. Tiredness may well have been a factor as Carbon had become increasingly comfortable on the ball and Joes were being worked very hard. However the heads did not go down and Joes were soon back in it with Campbell netting a fine strike before half-time and although he burst the ball with the toe poke, it was still a fine finish. Into the second half and Cowie, who had moved into midfield with Wilson looking after the back door gave Joes real hope with a fine finish and a grandstand fight back from Joes looked on. However those hopes were dashed when Carbon, against the run of play managed to grab a fourth to virtually kill the game and claim all three points. Joes were still not finished and grabbed a third in the dying minutes from a penalty from Gunn. A slide of some sort from Powell in the Carbon nets was deemed a penalty by the referee. Gunn slotted it past him with some ease but there was just not enough time left to grab an equaliser. However a fine battling show from the Joes who will look to pick up some more points to end the season on a high. Miller - 7 Not much chance with the goals and could be pleased with his night's work Gunn - 7 Continued his scoring streak and used the match as a warm down after his Halkirk training..... Sutherland 7 - Fine shift once again from the wide boy, as his fitness improves weekly Cowie 8 Versatility once again shone through as he played a blinder at the back before moving forward D.Ola - 7 Continues to defy logic in his 2nd half century of life, starved of service as he tried to continue his hot scoring streak Smith - 7 Says his nights of Dominoes are really paying off as his concentration on the park improves Campbell 7 Once again showed grit and determination and rounded off his performance with a fine strike Budge 5 Looks to have picked up some time wasting tricks from Cormack Wilson 8 The gaffer looked like he had never been away as he won countless headers in the second half as the lone defender MOTM - Cowie just edges out the gaffer this week
Enforced break doesn't harm Joes After two weeks kicking their heels Joes returned to action with some aplomb as they swept the fishermen of Lybster aside. In the absence of leader Wilson, the players were shown the way prior to kick-off by a sevens stalwart as they struggled to find the correct pitch to play on. However once they found the correct pitch they were soon out of the traps. None more so than perennial veteran Donald Olla. In the absence of shin pads it seemed he had gained a sixteenth of a yard of pace. Another shin pad story was that of youngster Campbell who is now on his second pair after he chewed up his new pair from Santa in a rage at missing an under 16's school disco. Joes were again without Moodie who apparently half of the squad don't know such has been his absenteeism. Ed Miller returned to form with some "cracking" saves in what was a "smashing" show which "broke" Lybster hearts. Stand in gaffer Cormack, who had picked his starting line - up well in advance of arriving at Naver went for: Miller Lannon, Gunn Sutherland, Cowie, A Miller D.Ola Subs – Cormack, Smith, Campbell, Budge With the game barely a minute gone Joes stunned their opponents with a quick fire opener. Olla minus the shin pads was in the right place to slot home. His understudy Campbell missed the goal from the sidelines such was his disappointment at being left on the bench. Whilst stand in gaffer Cormack was too busy listening to jokes and gaining some much needed defensive coaching from a sevens stalwart. However he did not have long to wait to see a goal as Olla doubled his tally soon after as he bids to land the Golden Boot and over 50's player of the year. Joes kept pressing and there were a number of opportunities to add to their lead with Budge missing a sitter before Cowie blazed one wildly over. Lannon then had a fine mazy run from the back but a rush of blood to the head as he was one on one with the keeper saw the chance gone. However fellow defender Gunn faired better on the stroke of half-time as he finished off a fine move to put Joes in 3 up at the break. The second half saw Joes start where they had left off and there were more chances. However the fourth goal saw Wills Smith finish a fine passing move as he cut in from the right of midfield. Smith could then have gone on to score at least 2 if not 3 more but his final product did not match his lead up play. With Joes perhaps starting too rest too much on their lead, Lybster, with only a squad of seven managed to pull a goal back. Rather than sparking Joes back into life, it seemed to make them even more listless and also inspired Lybster. They then proceeded to hit the bar and post on separate occasions whilst Miller had a cracking stop, before a second counter for Lybster really had the Joes faithful believing the nightmare scenario could really happen. Joes then came back into the match with Miller and Campbell both having gilt edged chances to end the Joes jitters. The cavalier attitude of the last 10 minutes could so easily have come back to haunt Joes but thankfully Lybster without subs ran out of steam and Joes picked up a precious 3 points. Miller - 7 Not all that busy until final quarter of match but pulled a couple of important saves as he continues to recover from his fear of glass Lannon 7 Lucky to make the squad as he hadn't finished all the wallpapering, will hopefully have it completed by next weeks match against Carbon Gunn - 8 Continues his impressive form at the back for Joes and showed he knows where the net is too Sutherland 7 - A changed man since he got his watch fixed, turning up on time and playing extremely well in the midfield Cowie 7 Another good shift from the wee man as he strives to capture the form of his brother in former years A Miller - 7 Great first half as he pushed on to left wing but work rate lacking in second. D.Ola - 7 Two great finishes from the Kris Boyd of Top Joes Cormack - 7 Benefited from his defensive coaching and cleverly ran down the clock even with Joes four goals to the good. Smith - 8 Excellent performance form the rejuvenated Smith as he has gone from not running the length of himself to running the length of the pitch (more than once too) Once he starts to pass, the world could be his oyster...... Campbell 7 Barnstorming performance from the youngster as he put himself about, will be disappointed not to have added to his goals tally Budge 4 Injury cut short his night which was probably just as well MOTM - Smith just edges it for his performance and dedication to Friday night trainings......
Return of Wilson not enough for Joes Once again it was men against boys when Top Joes locked horns against the Junior Acks. Unfortunately Joes were the boys. Just like last time a barrow load of goals, once again a football lesson handed out and not surprisingly once again, Moodie was unavailable. With the return of Wilson he was confident of a full squad until a couple of late call-offs. First up was new recruit Graeme Gunn. His "excuse" was that he had to make more popcorn for hi pregnant wife as her food cravings worsen. Apparently Will Smith was very sympathetic to this plight. Also calling off was Alistair Miller, unable to attend following a foot injury sustained whilst hoovering according to a certain Mr Campbell who will remain nameless. To add to the managers woes, Lannon was unfit to play following a wild goose chase since last Saturday night where he was looking for his tartan tie..... However Lannon was on hand to show off his Mr Motivator skills from the touchline. As Wilson decided we were on a hiding to nothing anyway, he decided to start with his regular subs bench and leave his usual starters on the bench, apparently it made sense..... Miller Wilson Cormack Smith Campbell Budge Olla Subs - Cowie, Sutherland (who had turned up in time) Joes started confidently before the whistle blew with Lannons words of "if you keep it in single figures you will be lucky" ringing in their ears. After 4 minutes it was 3 nil th juniors which included a slightly harsh penalty. After 12 minutes it was 6 nil and a complete embarrassment looked on the cards. Campbell was unlucky not to grab a consolation with a powerful drive which flew just wide. As half - time came it was only 7 nil and Joes felt they were still in it.... The second half saw a more solid Joes with firstly Sutherland going close and also the Caithenss sevens chairman also adding to the backline as he blocked a Junior Acks run into the box. Miller then decided to throw the gloves off much to the shock of his team mates. However this was just to tie hi laces, a job he finds hard enough even without gloves on. A late scare for Joes saw Donald Olla knocked to the ground with what he said was an elbow in the chin. however the sidelines view was that it was more likely the return of his arthritis. Donnie said he had seen stars and wondered was he dreaming as he though t the Joes had won 11 nil, unfortunately he had the right score but the wrong victors. However to look on the bright side, it could have been worse, it could have been 12 and at least we don't have to play them again this season!!! Ratings by Bruce Cormack Ed 4 2 points for banter, 2 for the
save at the end. Slow Start sees Joes go down to Thistle After last weeks morale boosting draw against the Whites, Joes faced promotion hopefuls Wick Thistle with some confidence. Joes were without their inspirational gaffer Wilson who was apparently spotted in Inverness near the Caledonian stadium on Thursday. Of course Moodie was unavailable for a change and Sutherland was available but decided to come for the last 5 minutes of the match. His official reason was he didn't get the same text as the other 10 members of the squad to tell him the match was at 6.30pm and not 7.30pm......... There was a boost with the return of striker Campbell who has now assured Wilson his shin pads will not go wandering again as he has written Martyn aged 14 and a half on them both. Donald Olla was unavailable after going into hiding following the revelations that his "goal" against the Whites was actually Ed Miller as no-one else had touched it on its way into the net......... So without Wilson it was up to stand in gaffer Smith to pick the following team:- Miller Lannon Cormack, Miller, Cowie, Smith Gunn Subs – Campbell, Budge, “Sutherland” There was barely a couple of minutes on the clock when Joes went one down. A simple through ball saw Miller and Lannon "turn" into the chuckle brothers with a routine of me to you to me to you (their own words) which unfortunately ended with the ball in the back of the net. A disaster of a start which saw the thistle boys take a stranglehold of the game and you feared the worst for Joes' goal difference. However Joes dug in well and slowly eased their way back into the match with the game finely balanced at half-time with Joes only a goal down. With thistle sometimes guilty of over playing Joes started to grow in confidence aided by the fact their opponents seemed to be growing frustrated at not stretching their lead. The second half saw Joes have a number of half chances without managing to breach the Thistle goal. As they pushed for an equaliser, they were hit with a classic sucker punch to go two down. However the heads didn't go down as Cowie rallied the troops to get back into the match, which Joes finished very strongly in the last 10 minutes. However the Joes couldn't get that elusive goal back to really heap the pressure on Thistle but perhaps missed the veteran Olla to "nick" a goal for them...... Miller – 6 Decided to tell Andy about his "goal" last week and while the lads chatted about it, the thistle striker nipped in to score Lannon – 6 As above, enough said Cormack - 7 Back to the form which had the scouts circling Castletown Primary, or was it the beavers? Miller - 7 Seems to be recapturing the form of his Crazy Gang days Cowie – 8 Back to his marauding best as he stamped his authority on the midfield Smith – 7 Back in the starting line-up, mainly due to the fact Wilson was absent and smith picked the team lines…. Gunn – 7 showed his versatility by starting up front, dropping to midfield and then playing at the back for the 2nd half. Apparently asked ed for his gloves too… Campbell - 7 Showed his loyalty to the cause by playing even although he had a school match the following day Budge - 6 Lasted the 2nd half as he bids to catch up with Smith in terms of fitness "Sutherland” - 1 Well better late than never...... MOTM - Big Cowie if
only for cajoling his team-mates with Joes down by two
Paparazzi
inspire Old Joes in derby match
The cameras had only just stopped flashing as the Old Joes went head to
head with the "other" Joes. On paper this looked like a hiding to
nothing for the Old Joes especially given last week's performances by
both sides. However as is the norm for derby matches, the form book
went out the window.
Having given generously to two local charities before kick-off, the Old
Joes decided the charity ended there. None more so than Joes
keeper, Ed Miller, who was particularly miserable to the opponents as he
thwarted anything they had to throw at him. That's not to say his
opposite number, former Thurso keeper, Lee Allan, had a quiet night.
Manager Wilson again decided not to get
stripped with perennial absentee Moodie also missing whilst youngster
Campbell was unavailable due to a misdemeanor at home resulting in his
new shin pads being confiscated.
Wilson lined his team up as follows:-
Miller
Lannon
Gunn, Cowie, Cormack, Sutherland
Olla
Subs - Miller, Smith, Budge
Joes started the match well and seemed to be inspired by the touchline encouragement given by Joes leg end Steve Mackie. The snapper stayed behind to support his old school chum Olla who he insisted had not lost any of his lightning pace since their scho9olboy games together. Miller was called into action early with two fine stops denying the other Joes whilst also helping his own team settle into the match. Chances went a begging at both ends with the two keepers in great form. As the match wore on the frustration grew for the other Joes as their title aspirations were beginning to look somewhat unfounded. The stalemate was not broken by half - time which seemed to lift the Old Joes somewhat. As the second half got underway, the other Joes pushed forward looking for a breakthrough but they couldn't find a way past a stubborn defence of Lannon and at times Gunn making fine last ditch saves. Then the unthinkable happened, a high ball down the middle saw Allan, Terminator and Olla get in a tangle at the edge of the box. It is still unknown who got the last touch with sideline pundits believing Olla got the first touch before Terminator and then finally Allan. however it didn't seem to matter as the ball trundled slowly into the net. However there was still 12 minutes of the math remaining, could the old Joes hang onto the slenderest of leads, or even more, could they grab a second goal. Well a fin chance came the way of Miller but unfortunately lost his footing as he was about to pull the trigger. Lannon then notched his 2nd booking of the season as the minutes whittled down. Then disaster, Sutherland found space at the edge of the box and smacked an unstoppable shot past Miller to equalise and break old Joes hearts. Less than 2 minutes later the whistle blew and a share of the spoils was probably a fair result for both teams. Miller 8 Back on the porridge after his "showing" last week and what a difference! A great performance as he frustrated the other Joes all night
Lannon 8
Recovered well from his early setback of being forced to wear a hat for
the pictures due to his shiny knapper
Gunn 8 The new dad to be yet again proved why Wilson pulled out all the stops to sign him. Cowie 8 Great shift in the middle of the park as he has regained last season's form Cormack 8 As a wise man once said, he may not have the legs anymore (well maybe he never had them) but he still has the football brain... Sutherland 8 Managed to arrive in time which was a feat in itself Olla 8 Quite possibly the best goal he will ever "score"....... Miller 8 Good support to the striker and a fine step over the imaginary skipping rope with the goal gaping..... Smith 8 Has been forgiven for his 3 legged misdemeanour and has regained the race to be Player of the Year at the bi-annual Top Joes awards ceremony Budge 5 Fitness leaves a lot to be desired Man of the Match - The Buckies boy takes it if only for the massive improvement from last week!
No New Year cheer for Joes Disaster struck for Joes in their first game of 2009. With more or less a full squad to choose from, manager Wilson was in buoyant mood, even affording himself the luxury of sitting this one out and heading home late to put the bairn to bed. On the back of a fine 4-1 win against Blackstairs in their final game of 2008, the omens looked good for a positive result against the Sharks. Wilson went for a strong looking starting line up of:- Miller Gunn Lannon, Sutherland Cowie Miller Ola Subs – Smith, Budge, Campbell, Cormack An even start to the match saw both teams with chances before a high ball caught Miller out. The Buckies lad flapped slightly at the ball and it fell into the net. the heads went down for Joes and worse was to follow as another keeper error allowed Sharks to go 2 goals up. Tempers began to fray with sub Cormack showing his frustration with a couple of petulant schoolboy kicks at a Sharks forward. This was followed by what can only be described as an attempted WWF D.D.T which Cormack last tried whilst still attending Castletown Primary. Joes did get back into the match with a fine solo run and finish from new signing Graeme Gunn. However this was short-lived as Sharks scored another two quick fire goals, one of which seemed to go in straight from a corner. However after much deliberation by Wilson, he came to the conclusion it was awarded to Sharks. With Sharks somewhat losing their appetite, Joes began to come more and more into the game. With the minutes counting down, Smith stepped up to the plate, and no for the first time. A fine angled drive from Joes answer to Anton Rogan had the Joes bench on tenterhooks. Worse was to follow a minute later as Joes homed in on the Sharks goal with a 3 on 1, only for the ref to haul the play back to send off a Sharks defender. You just couldn't make it up. This seemed to deflate the Joes and the fight somewhat left them in the final 3 minutes as the Sharks somewhat fortunately held on to claim all 3 points. Miller 6 A couple of howlers from the Buckies boy but also made a number of fine saves, perhaps his shenanigans over the festive period took their toll. Gunn 8 Tireless work rate from the Carsgoe body builder and capped a fine performance with a goal from defence. Lannon 7 The accident prone Joes legend showed his versatility when asked to play in midfield and put in a useful shift, still looks fit even though he’s getting on a bit Sutherland 7 Continues to improve with games and gives his all to the cause Cowie 7 The newly engaged midfield powerhouse looked every inch the ready made house husband Miller 7 Dug deep over the holidays to buy Martyn his shin pads Ola - 6 Is starting to turn a bit quicker than the real Ola, will be disappointed not to have hit the net in this one. Smith - 6 Disappointed to be benched after his early season form, however the gaffer confirmed the 21lb turkey had condemned Smith to the bench Budge - 5 Looked like he had ate half the turkey Wills had finished Campbell 6 The smile on his face told it all, Santa had delivered those shiny new shin pads Cormack 6 Discipline called into question on a number of occasions, on another night could have been sent off at least twice Man of the Match - If only to prove to Gunger that he can still get the award even after he has signed.....
Joes back on track with performance of their season They may have waited until half way through the season but it was definitely worth the wait. Joes produced their best performance and result in the final game of the 1st round of fixtures before the Christmas break. The fact it was against Blackstairs, who have started their debut season very well, meant it was all the sweeter for Joes. This was also without the guidance of their inspirational manager Wilson. Although the manager had secured the services of an able replacement in Bruce Cormack, the former assistant coach to Joes legend Richie Woodcock. Joes were surprisingly without Moodie yet again and the maverick that is Andy Lannon was also out with a groin strain. However new signing Graham Gunn was able to take his place having spent the afternoon hanging curtains so he was allowed out. Wills Smith also bravely played despite carrying a shoulder injury following a rather prolonged game of dominoes in the Legion recently. With Cormack running late for a change, Budge picked a very strong starting line up of :- I Miller G Gunn C Sutherland, K Cowie, W Smith, A Miller D Sinclair With a bench of Martyn (the Shin guard) Campbell and himself. The Blackstairs started very brightly and could possibly have been three or four up in as many minutes. However Miller earned his corn with a couple of knee stops and a feet stop. This seemed to galvanise Joes and they increasingly came into the game with Gunn building from the back with some crisp passing. The Blackstairs were still playing some neat football but began taking pot shots from distance which were not even troubling Miller in the Joes goal. With the Joes team really working as a team it looked like Joes were more the likely team to open the scoring and so it proved. A fine mazy run from Gunn, with a one-two with cowie thrown in saw him hit the net from an acute angle. The lead was nearly doubled as a net bound shot from Budge was intercepted by glory hunter Smith who somehow managed to hit it off the post and back into the keepers arms. However this seemed to give Backstairs a shot in the arm and towards the end of the half they were looking increasingly dangerous as Joes began to defend more and more deeply. A quick kick in from the right saw Budge lose his marker and a quick one two saw the Blackstairs attacker smash the ball past Miller with only seconds until the whistle blew. HT 1-1 Cormack made a couple of changes at the break and his team talk certainly seemed to work. The second half was hardly a minute old before Joes were back in the lead. A great through ball from Cowie saw Budge given the easiest of chances to slot the ball past the Blackstairs keeper. It was not long before the Top Joes legions were rubbing their eyes in disbelief. A break from Cowie saw the professional nanny unleash a powerful shot which was going close to the corner flag until it inadvertently hit off a Blackstairs defender and nestled nicely in the net. As the clock ran down, the Joes supporters were watching it with some trepidation having gone through last 5 heartbreak all too many times before. However the shocks were not over yet as semi retired Donald Ola stepped up to the plate to fire home Joes’ fourth of the match to seal the points and also to move Joes up the table. The drama did not end their though as Gunn decided to remind a youngster in the Blackstairs team about the rules of the game, both before and after the final whistle. However nothing could take away from a fantastic result and performance from the lads, thoroughly deserved which brings much hope for the remainder of the campaign. I Miller 9 Looked solid throughout, patter improving.... G Gunn 8 Strong in the tackle and bullied a youngster, brilliant. K Cowie 8 Would have enjoyed his chipper after his performance, although now he'll know what it feels like for Budge to try to steal a goal from him.... C Sutherland 8 Good shift in midfield, attack and defence. Still hasn't worked out the time it takes to drive to Naver though. A Miller 8 The Doug Rougvie of the squad - had a great opportunity to dive but was worried he would never get back up again. Solid throughout. W Smith 7 Ball, Wills, go chase, that's a good boy. D Sinclair 7 Finally found the net in the second half with a good finish. Not that he had many chances before that...... M Campbell 7 Earns credit for saying he preferred right midfield to centre (twice) and still played in the centre when told - good shift from junior. W Budge 8 Well, it's taken 4 years but he knows where the net is now.....tried another cheeky claim too....good shift by Achalone's answer to Wayne Biggins.
Man of the Match is the Buckies Legend Ian "Ed" Miller. This is for 2 reasons, namely, 1) Saving a lot of efforts on goals early on in the match giving us a good base to build on and 2) For writing on the front cover of his dirty sponsor form "Sorry, the dog jumped on it". Sidelines Comment - great shift from the lads, a thoroughly deserved victory against an impressive looking side who just didn't gel as well as us on the night.
Missed chances prove costly in the end A makeshift Joes side were left to rue a host of gilt edged chances at the end of this exciting affair. Prior to the match it looked like an already thin squad had been stretched too far with only 6 men available at lunchtime. However manager Wilson managed to field a coupe of trialists as well as lifting himself off the treatment table to answer his own call. Graeme Gunn played the final of his trial matches whilst young Norburn played the first of his two. Wilson was without Lannon, Moodie, Cowie and Sutherland, with not one of them having a decent excuse. Well Cowie's was not too bad as he has now started a night class at the North Highland College as he seeks to attain a HNC in Childcare. Unfortunately for Joes, it is held on a Thursday night. The coach went with the following starting line-up due to the non-appearance of Martyn Campbell's shin pads until 5 minutes after kick-off. 1. Edward Miller (GK) 2. Graeme Gunn 3. Young Norburn, 4. William Smith, 5. Alistair Miller, 6. Willie Budge 7. Donald Olla Subs Joes started the match as they had finished the Ashes game, on the ascendancy. This was to continue for the whole first half as Joes completely dominated last season's first division side. Within 3 minutes a fine4 run up the wing saw Norburn cross for Budge, with the simplest of tap-ins he managed to not connect with the ball at all and the chance went a begging. Joes continued to bombard the Lybster back line with Joes keeper Miller being a virtual spectator. However as chances went amiss for Budge once again, Olla and Smith, the signs were ominous for Joes. However Olla atoned for an easier miss when he scored a peach of a goal with just a few minutes until half time. The Joes were coasting but lacked goals to show for all their efforts. if Lybster did manage a break up field, Gunn was on hand to mop up and start another attach. Half-time came and Joes just had their solitary goal to show. They entered the 2nd half with confidence even without all their top stars. However their world came crashing down around them just a couple of minutes into the second half. A free-kick for Lybster took a deflection off the wall to send miller the wrong way and give Lybster an undeserved equaliser. Joes heads did not go down although and Olla attempted to copy Budge's glaring miss from the 1st half, however he went one better and did the "Van Vossen". Joes would regain the lead and thankfully Campbell's shin pads had arrived and he slotted a fine 2nd for Joes after a quick break. The Joes bench had hardly finished celebrating when Lybster managed to nick another equaliser. However worse was to follow when they quickly grabbed a third goal to lead for the first time in the match. Joes fought ton till the death though, with Smith now taking his turn to miss a sitter. Norburn also had a couple of mazy runs which saw his shots go narrowly past whilst Olla smacked a low drive off the post. Three corners in the last 2 minutes showed the pressure Joes put on the Lybster rearguard but they could not breach their goal for a third time, with Miller coming closest with a header right tat the end. A sickener for Joes depleted squad who can surely never have dominated a game quite so much and lost it. Ed 6 Probably one of the quieter games he has had in the Joes goal, little chance with any of the goals

The revelation of the season and is now nearly
forgiven for missing the 3 legged Martin 6 Might get a start next week if he minds his shin pads, took his goal very well Donnie 6 Scored the difficult one and then missed the easy one, unlucky with the shot off the post too Alistair 7 A fine performance from the Anton Rogan on the left side, put himself about Gunger 8 All action display yet again and could be a major player if he decides to sign MOTM Norburn 7 Fantastic first start ands could be a real find by the gaffer if he can get him playing again Jazus 6 The player coach showed what it meant to him to pull on the jersey by climbing out his sick bed
Late surge not enough for Joes A late surge from Joes was not enough to stop them coming out of this basement battle with Ashes with no points. A sluggish first half saw the game all but over as Ashes raced into a 3 goal lead. This only compounded the misery for Joes manager Wilson. With Moodie out he then had Cowie pull out as he had a prior engagement with a large tub of popcorn. The final nail was the injury setback to maverick keeper, Ed Miller. With Miller helping out with the housework, he stretched up too far with the feather duster and ended up pulling a muscle in his back. On the plus side, Joes managed to field trialist Graham Gunn, formerly of Halkirk 7s and also Halkirk United. Manager Wilson was staying tight lipped about whether Gun would be signed for the rest of the season. The starting line up was:- 1. Andy Lannon (GK) 2. Bruce Cormack 3. William Smith, 4. Craig Sutherland, 5. Marin Campbell, 6. Willie Budge 7. Donald Olla Subs 10. Michael Wilson (Player Coach) The game started similarly to the Tongue match with Joes looking bright and stringing some passes together. However a turn of pace from Ashes striker Hutcheon saw him accelerate away from Cormack, and with no cover, he smashed the ball past the advancing Lannon. This seemed to be the queue for Joes to go into their shells. Ashes took full advantage by stretching Joes at every opportunity and soon doubled their lead. However Cormack was getting to grips with his opponent and somehow managed to keep his name out of the referee's book. A corner was the undoing of Joes for the third Ashes goal. Some slack marking allowed Ashes to go into what looked like an unassailable 3 nil lead. Joes came in at the break somewhat despondent but knew Ashes had a reputation for throwing away leads. An early 2nd half goal was imperative for Joes but unfortunately it didn't come. Although Gunn had a couple of great runs with the keeper making a fine stop at the climax of one of them. It was the closing 5 minutes when Joes really made a go of it. A corner from the right was headed out and fell to Cormack a good distance away from goal. the former Castletown under 15 sent a powerful drive which looked like it may have done damage to a Comm player on the adjacent pitch. However Budge managed to divert the ball with his knee and with the Ashes keeper stranded, Joes were dreaming of a famous comeback. Only a minute later and Alistair miller rode a coupe3l of challenges before unleashing a low drive into the Ashes net. It seemed the dream could become reality but although Joes pounded the Ashes goal for the remainder of the match, that elusive equaliser just wouldn't come. Andy 8 Showed his versatility once again by taking the gloves, didn't have much chance with any of the goals and pulled off a couple of good stops in the 2nd half

As last week, nothing to do with his performance, more to do with
him missing the 3 legged for a "house warming" Martin 6 Playing out of position on the left and worked hard Donnie 6 The veteran hit man didn't have many chances to add to his solitary strike but can certainly spot a goals corer... Alistair 7 Got himself on the score sheet and can be pleased with his contribution Craig 6 Decent display but perhaps should be getting those eyes tested Bruce 6 A fine goal assist from the defender. Caught out by the pace of the Ashes striker but quickly found ways to combat it Jazus 6 The player coach replaced the tiring Cormack and slotted in well at the back. Has now stopped gaffers comments though Gunger (trialist) 8 even without full fitness, performed very well and could be a very useful addition to the squad MOTM
Tongue take points as Joes cant halt slump in hailstorm In a dreadful night for football, even by Naver standards, the Joes search for a 2nd league win continued. Whilst Tongue United have obviously extended their catchment area since last year to bolster their squad, Joes were hoping to get back to winning ways against the "westers". In all fairness they deserved their win although all three goals came from defensive mistakes by Joes. There was a pre match boost with the return of Shaun Moodier to the squad where he was joined by a former ever present Kevin Cowie. Thankfully Kevan was relieved of his Super nanny duties this week and was available for selection. The only absentee was Craig Sutherland who continues to have a "bad back" when the weather forecast is dodgy for a Thursday night. A latecomer to the squad this week was Martin Campbell who saw a curfew lifted after he ate all his greens and tidied his bedroom, as well as completing his homework. Andy Lannon also managed to string two consecutive appearances together for the first time in 4 years as he dragged himself away from his videos although he only managed to pass a late fitness test after feeling a stiffness during the pre-match warm-up. 1. Ed Miller (GK) 2. Bruce Cormack 3. Andy Lannon, 4. Kevin Cowie, 5. William A Smith, 6. Willie Budge 7. Donald Olla Subs 24. Sean Moodie 10. Michael Wilson (Player Coach) The match kicked off with a horizontal hailstorm and it seemed the game would be unplayable. However Mr Wheatcroft is a keen meteorologist and knew it would only last a few minutes. It was during this opening spell that Joes looked dangerous and a couple of openings were carved out. Budge had a chance but opted for a wayward cross when it seemed simpler to fire a shot at Mowat in the Tongue net. That chance would prove costly as Tongue opened the scoring following a mix up in the Joes defence. There was only the one goal separating the teams at half-time but Joes shot themselves in the foot again, early in the 2nd half as another defensive blunder allowed Tongue to double their lead. The Joes heads were down now and Tongue added a third to seal the victory. However the last 10 minutes of the game saw Joes up the pace and they could easily have snatched a goal or two as Tongue became slightly lax at the back. However it was not to be and the cosmopolitan Tongue united climb the league as Joes slip closer to the bottom with a basement battle against the Ashes to come next week. Ed 7 Little chance with any of the goals Andy 8 Sidelines quote was priceless MOTM

Nothing to do with his performance, more to do with
him missing the 3 legged for a "house warming" Martyn 6 Did well to make the game after his prematch "misdemeanour". Donnie 6 what can you say, with every week that goes past, he seems to age.......... Alistair 7 Good performance from the big man. Bruce 6 Seems to be getting back to a level of fitness he had years ago, just a pity it wasn't a higher level Jazus 6 Thought about keeping the waterproofs on but thankfully removed them before entering the field of play Shaun 6 Strangely subdued and was not his usual girning self, possibly missing Yug? Joes get lesson from the school kids The score line does not quite paint the correct picture of this game, as Junior Acks ran out 9-1 winners. However unfortunately it flattered the Joes rather than the schoolboys. To think Ed Miller is in the frame for the man of the match award after seeing 9 goals go past him tells its own story. On the other side, Joes did not lack effort and nobody was a failure. However this could without question have been Joes toughest match of the season, if not in their sevens history. Such was the skill and fitness of their opponents. Its not all doom and gloom though, the same team played 1st Division Naver United the night before meeting Joes and beat them 10-2!!! Joes were once again without the mercurial figure of Moodier who was absent once again, it seems if there was any other treasurer in charge of the Joes, he would be due a rebate on his signing fee. Also missing was playmaker Kevin Cowie who was still trying to flog some tickets for the anniversary dinner held the previous weekend. Although there was a boost with the return of Sutherland after he managed to get some wedding plans sorted out. The team lined up as follows:- 1. Ed Miller (GK) 2. Andy Lannon 3. Alistair Miller, 4. Mick Wilson 5. William A Smith, 6. Willie Budge 7. Donald Olla Subs 10. Craig Sutherland
The game - no actual report this week other than to congratulate the Juniors on an impressive display. Oh and Smith somehow managed to score again...... Ed 7 Some great save's to keep the score line in single figures! MOTM Andy 6 Did well against a very pacy side

Not alot of opportunities but did well. Bruce 6 Had hoped to try his shirt pulling antics of the previous game but sadly couldn't get close enough to the juniors to do it. Jazus 6 The gaffer took himself off before he got sent off! No comment from the gaffer this week, not that he didn't want to, it just he was still trying to get his breath back when contacted for a quote 2 hours after the match
Thistle are thorn in Joes side Joes lined up against the newcomers from Wick hoping to get their season back on track. However although a decent performance the points went back to Wick. In a score line which possibly flattered the Wickers, Joes held their own for long periods but at the end of the day could have no complaints over the result. The exclusion of midfield powerhouse Moodie would appear to be having an effect on the Joes. As well as his on field prowess, the lads seem to be missing his quality banter off the field and it is hoped he will return before Christmas, that's 2008 in case he's wondering. Its amazing to think that the 3 legged charity run may actually take place before Moodie returns, now who could have predicted that one..... Joes were also without their influential Sutherland who is still on the crocks list but is hopeful of a return next week against the Junior Acks, whom he told the gaffer are more his size of opponents. With the shortage of personnel, the gaffer Wilson included himself in the squad and went for a starting line-up as below:- The team lined up as follows:- 1. Ed Miller (GK) 2. Bruce Cormack 3. Andy Lannon, 4. Kevin Cowie, 5. William A Smith, 6. Willie Budge 7. Martin Campbell Subs 10. Michael Wilson (Player Coach) The match saw Joes start brightly with Cormack certainly getting to grips with the Thistle striker. In fact it seemed Cormack was in a time zone as he tried to swap shirts with Kojak 5 minutes into the match instead of at the end. A bright note for Joes was the continued good form this season of midfield maestro Wills Smith. He was unlucky with a crisp drive in the first held, whilst Donnie Ola tried to emulate it in the 2nd half without much success. Miller kept Joes in it with some super saves although the Thistle keeper was kept on his toes as Joes battled bravely to get back into the match after an early setback. However as the fitness aspect began to hit Joes in the 2nd half, Thistle were able to add a second and then third goal to put a somewhat unfair glossy score line on the match.
Ed 6 Some great save's, another good game even without his trademark solo run.
Bruce 6
Kept Kojak at
bay,another good shift.
Wills 6.5
Kept his good form of late going, fine display.

A hard game for the young man, but got in a good cross. Jazus 5 Webmasters Man of the Match - WILLIAM SMITH, another fine display from the rejuvenated Smith Gaffer's Comments - We held Wick thistle off for a long time, were still getting used to our new formation, but improving each week. Personaly i think the score flattered them.
Its back down to earth with a bump for Joes Following their opening night success, Joes came up against the self confessed favourites for the 2nd Division title, Top Joes Whites. With RG's/Bower/Disco Boys/Robbie & George's now in the top flight, someone had to take on the mantle. The manager was still unavailable to take charge last night and is apparently working in Ullapool whilst talisman Moodie is thankfully still offshore. Defensive stalwart Lannon was away on his eighth holiday of the year, with a visit to a top salon in London, high on his list of priorities. The team lined up as follows:- 1. Ed Miller (GK) 2. Kevin Cowie 3. Alistair Miller, 4. Bruce Cormack, 5. Craig Sutherland, 6. Willie Budge 7. Olla Subs However in truth, the whites were deserving of their 3 points, although the final score line perhaps slightly flattered them. Nonetheless, the superior fitness was possibly the telling factor as Top Joes started brightly only to be hit with two quick goals from the whites. The heads stayed and Budge should have done better with a one on one with the keeper only to se his effort come off the post but then Cowie once again hit the net as he sets a terrific pace for this year's Golden boot award. No sooner had Joes pulled that goal back than the whites once again stretched their lead with another brace to lead 4 - 1. With half - time looming, summer signing Campbell, kept a cool head to slot home an angled drive to give Joes some hope for eh turnaround. This was to be short-lived as the Whites seized on a defensive mix-up to grab a fifth before a fine solo run saw William A smith of all people grab the Top Joes' third goal of the evening. As the match was drawing to a close, the Whites grabbed another two goals to effectively finish the match as a contest. F-T Top Joes 3 - 7 The artists formerly known as Thurso Rangers RATINGS by the Manager (stand in) Ed 6 Some
good saves but better banter. Cowie puts the bite into Sharks The opening game of the season came a week earlier than expected for Joes due to the withdrawal of Pentlands and subsequent rejig of the fixtures. However there was no first night nerves as Joes opened their account for the season with 3 points. The fact it was old adversaries sharks who were on the end of a Joes win makes it all the more sweeter. With a new season Joes have one or two new faces in the squad but some are also old faces too. Into the squad have come Martyn Campbell and Craig Sutherland whilst making returns are Sean Moodie and Donald Sinclair. Fortunately for Joes, Sinclair was too old to qualify for the Thurso Comm's under 45's and has signed up on a pay as you play deal. With the first game being a week earlier, Joes were without their manager Wilson and midfield dynamo Moodier. However they could call on veteran William smith as he had returned in time from a short break in Ireland. It seems that Wills was off in Dublin for a Jimmy Carr concert. Sadly the tickets were for the wrong date. However Wills was not disappointed as it was actually it was Alan Carr he wanted to see........ In the managers absence the reins were passed to former manager Cormack with the following line-up 1. Iain Miller (GK) F-T Top Joes 3 - 2 Sharks RATINGS by the Manager (stand in)
